Stress Causes Of Shingles

By arlen arron at 2011-01-31 03:57:41
While it is likely you are aware that some people suffer from Shingles; unless you are a doctor or medical professional, there is little chance you know what it actually is, what symptoms it produces, how harmful it can be to you, or if it can really be cured. If you have to cope or live with Shingles, you will need to learn what it is, what it's symptoms are and what you can do to handle it or at least minimize its effects.

If you suspect that you have shingles, you must see your doctor immediately. This is critical especially if the pain and rash are near your eyes. The infection can cause permanent eye damage. Your doctor will conduct a physical exam and ask questions about your symptoms. He may also obtain tissue scrapings of the rash for laboratory testing. Getting immediate treatment will lower the risk of developing complications.

Stress can cause shingles because chronic stress will affect the immune system. Normally, during a stressful event the body will change the way the immune system will work. This is done by passing adrenaline and cortisol through the bloodstream. In terms of the immune system this will increase the consistency of the blood to make it thicker or sticky.

The available treatments will hopefully lessen the duration of a shingles outbreak and to control the intense pain. Using a medicated lotion, such as Benadryl or Caladryl on the actual blisters might help to reduce the pain and itching. Using a cool compress that is soaked in an astringent liquid on the blisters and sores might help to make them hurt or itch less. Trust me, they hurt as I have been through it.

As for the treatment we can say that there is no cure for them but the severity of the illness can be reduced if a treatment with antiviral drugs starts as soon as possible. This is why it is the best to take some precautionary measures like vaccination against shingles and thorough hand washing, However, if you already got shingles there are certain things to do to ease your condition. Scratching should be avoided because it may lead to a bacterial infection or even scarring.

Shingles is the common name given to the viral disease known as herpes zoster. This ailment is characterized by a skin rash or blisters that appear only a limited area of the body. Typically, shingles appear in the form of stripes. Initially, the virus affects young people in the form of chicken pox, but even after the ailment is treated the virus doesn't go away from the body. Many years after the episode of chicken pox, the virus emerges again with very different symptoms in the forms of shingles.

Early diagnosis and treatment is important to minimize the symptoms of Shingles and reduce the risk of complications that may compromise vision. This is due to the fact that the Shingles disease can affect the eyes. They are connected to nerves that may be infected with the virus.

Another term used for the disease is St. Anthony's Fire because of the enduring pain that seems to come from the nerves to the muscles and tissues. Aside from the pain, one will also develop reddish blisters. Fever, chills, fatigue, headache and stomach pains also accompany shingles. Of course, the rashes or blisters may also feel a little itchy.

Shingles is an excruciatingly painful rash which occurs in people who have had chickenpox. The virus that causes chickenpox, scientifically known as the varicella-zoster virus, is the same one that causes shingles (a form of the herpes virus). What happens is that after you've had the pox, it lies dormant in your body. Then, perhaps decades later, it re-emerges - in the form of a painful and desperately painful and unpleasant rash.

Age, stress and poor physical health are all factors that can lower your immune system's ability to contain this shingles virus completely. In this case the virus could once again attack but this time instead of the herpes zoster virus creating an annoying case of chicken pox it will target your body with a painful and debilitating disease known as Shingles.

Shingles Appear as a Red Rash with Clear Blisters: The virus causes an eruption, usually in a straight line rather than a random pattern, of red bumps which form clear blisters, much like chickenpox. The major difference between the two diseases is that shingles can be very painful because they form around nerves. Elderly patients, incidentally, tend to suffer greater pain for a longer period of time than other shingles sufferers.
