Trigger Finger Exercises

By arlen arron at 2011-02-03 02:58:34
Trigger Finger is a form of overuse injury with symptoms ranging from a painless annoyance with occasional snapping/jerking of the finger(s), to severe dysfunction and pain with continuous locking of the finger(s) in a flexed downward position into the palm of the hand.

Trigger Finger is becoming a common, yet quite serious problem among many individuals, just as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome has been the past decade, and still is. Although Carpal Tunnel has received all the media hype in the past, Trigger Finger is currently affecting millions of Americans each year, causing suffers to experience lost time from work, expensive rehabilitation and often long-term disability.

The symptoms of Trigger Finger can vary in severity, but the telltale sign of the finger "catching" or "locking" is a symptom that no one can miss. As the finger is flexed downward towards the pal of the hand, the finger can snap down, locking into the pal of the hand. As the finger is extended, often times with the assistance of the opposing hand to straighten the finger, it will snap back into the extended position.

Trigger Finger is often painless and annoying, but in more severe cases, the condition can be quite painful and downright debilitating, impeding the ability to participate in simple everyday tasks. Many individuals deal with the condition for years before addressing it, causing long-term damage to the tendon(s) and preventing themselves from enjoying both work and recreational activities.

Trigger finger is caused by local swelling due to inflammation of the flexor tendon sheath of the affected finger, at the level of the palm. This may be due to repetitive strain injury, overuse or underlying inflammatory conditions. As the space within the tendon sheath narrows, it hinders the smooth gliding of the tendon, and causes catching of the finger in a bent position before popping straight.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is the most widely recognized form of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI), but Trigger Finger is catching up fast, becoming all too common among society and affecting the youth and elderly in ever-increasing numbers. If the rising numbers keep on track, Trigger Finger may be recognized along with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome as having achieved epidemic proportions.

Trigger Thumb is a more common injury in women than men, and it is more often noticed in people that are suffering from chronic illnesses. Rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes, for example, are common correlates of Trigger Thumb. The reason for this seems to be caused by the speed in which people heal from injury, and people with chronic disorders like diabetes and arthritis tend to heal at a much slower rate.

Of all these common causes of finger pain carpal tunnel is by far the leader. It is treatable without needing to go to the doctors. There are many exercises you can do to relieve the pain. Most over the counter medicines will also help relieve the pain. Using cold water dunks is a very popular method for relieving pain.

That is what led me to where you might be now. You may have suffered from a fracture, surgery to repair a trigger or mallet finger or maybe just a severe sprain. Whatever happened, just like me you figured the internet would provide you with a program that your doctor did not supply. Maybe your injury didn't even require a doctor's visit, and you just want to know what to do to get back to whatever it was that may have put you into this position in the first place. Personally, I don't think I will ever go back to gardening work.

Palpation should be done very cautiously and carefully. Using a gloved and lubricated finger is best. Anything introduced into the rectum should be sterile, obviously. Having the man "bear down" will help with the introduction of any object into the rectum.
