Xerostomia Treatment

By arlen arron at 2011-02-11 03:38:43
Xerostomia is a condition of dry mouth characterized by reduction in salivary flow. This subjective complaint of oral dryness often develops when the amount of saliva that bathes the mucous membrane of mouth is reduced. But it is observed that the symptoms of xerostomia may occur without a measurable reduction in salivary gland output.

Xerostomia is a clinical condition characterized by dryness of the mouth due to a lack of saliva production by the salivary glands located in the lower and posterior parts of the mouth. It is not an acknowledged abnormality in and of itself but generally accompanies another, more serious condition.

There are times that mouth dryness is from nerve damage from a surgery or injury. Dehydration, fever, diarrhea, and burns may lead to dry mouth. Sometimes surgical procedures can also cause Xerostomia. Salivary gland damage will lead to the condition. Radiation from chemotherapy or treatments will also reduce the production of saliva. Medical side affects like Sjogrens, AIDS, diabetes, hypertension.

There are several factors that can cause xerostomia. For instance, people who take medication have a higher risk for developing dry mouth. The reason is because of the side effects that may accompany taking the medicine. People who are on chemotherapy drugs also have a higher risk of developing xerostomia.

Dry mouth, a conditional also known as xerostomia, is reported to affect a third of the US adult population. There are two main causes for xerostomia. The first is aging. Saliva production naturally decreases as we grow older. The second most common cause is medication. More than 600 different types of medication site dry mouth as a common side effective.

No matter why a person has xerostomia, it is vital to treat it, and a new product has been proven to reduce symptoms, according to JADA. The OraMoist brand mucoadhesive patch, available over-the-counter from pharmacies like Walgreens, can be adhered to the inside of the mouth to moisten it. This patch is perceived as a long term solution for mouth dryness, due to its sustainability when tested on patients.

It has long been known that dental biofilm plays a major role in the cause of gingivitis, periodontitis and cavities. Dental biofilm is formed much more rapidly in a mouth that is dry because there is less saliva to flush the bacteria away. And worse, acid-forming bacteria are surviving in the acidic saliva and cause the often rampant dental decay associated with xerostomia.

There are minor and serious problems associated with this. Difficulty with swallowing can result from too little saliva in the mouth thus causing people to not eat or get proper nutrition. People can also lose their sense of taste and smell from reduced saliva. Denture wearers also can suffer from too little saliva as it is needed to help keep dentures in place.

As seen from the above list, the side-effects are random and even somewhat contradictory, e.g., constipation and diarrhea. This shows that it is not possible to predict which of the side-effects a particular patient will experience. It can be surmised that side-effects are idiosyncratic to individual patients, with many patients not experiencing any side-effect at all.

Getting rid of bad breath can be a challenge. Typical home treatments if effective at all were only a temporary solution. Dentists, until recent years, would often compound the problem with traditional dental hygiene solutions that never addressed the real issue which are the creation of volatile sulfur compounds or VSC's. Contrary to the once held belief that fowl breath odor comes from the stomach; research has proven that this usually is not the case.

The symptoms are - fever, malaise and nausea, pain in gums while eating, headaches, neck aches and jaw aches and serious tooth pain whereas the signs are - abscessed teeth, attrition of the teeth, bad breath, broken teeth, rampant tooth decay and recurrent ANUG.

Xerostomia is another common cause of bad breath - it's a medical condition when your mouth is too dry. It is often caused by medication, but sometimes also by habitually breathing through your mouth instead of your nose or simply a general state of dehydration (for example, if you don't drink enough water).
