Numbness in Toes and Feet

By arlen arron at 2011-02-14 04:18:54
The term "arthritis" is derived from the Greek and means "joint inflammation". It refers to more than 100 different diseases that can cause pain, swelling, and stiffness in the joints. Joints are where the ends of long bones connect and interact. The end of each bone inside a joint has a thin layer of cartilage and is held in place by ligaments, tendons, and muscles.

Type 2 diabetes is one of the commonest causes of peripheral neuropathy, a condition in which messages have difficulty traveling between your brain and your hands and feet. Diabetics often complain of numbness in their hands and feet, or cold tingling, burning feelings... all these can be symptoms of neuropathy, a common complication of the nerves or nervous system.

Usually the bouts with loss of sensation comes after diabetes has already taken hold of you, but this is not always the case. But, since this is a common partnering ailment of diabetes, a doctor should be consulted an a blood glucose test should be given.

Diabetes is a serious disease that affects millions of Americans, and that number is going to astronomically grow as the baby boomer generation ages further. Complications associated with diabetes can be devastating, and can lead to organ failure and even death. Foot-related complications in particular are very common in diabetes, and unfortunately cause the majority of leg amputations performed by surgeons.

When you experience numbness you are experiencing peripheral neuropathy, which in layman terms is nerve damage. To avoid this there are a variety of things you can do such as keeping your blood glucose levels in the normal range, reduce your alcohol intake or quit altogether, and if you smoke quit as soon as possible. Each of these contribute to damage to your nervous system.

Like corns, collouses are the thickened layer of the outer skin, which develop under the foot especially in the area between the big toe nails and base of the small toes. callouses should be rubbed with a pumice stone or shaven off with a plastic razor. You must apply an antiseptic lotion later, as a precaution. But don't try to treat any aggravated condition yourself. Have it checked by a physician or a chiropodist.

Some people with nerve damage have no symptoms at all. For others, the first symptom of type 2 diabetes and nerve damage, are often numbness in their hands and feet, or tingling or pain in their feet. Neuropathy typically begins with what is called the "stocking and glove effect... slight numbness that starts at the tips of your fingers or toes.

People who have diabetes know that they need to take extra care of their feet to reduce or eliminate the pain and complications often associated with the disease. Pain, numbness and tingling in the extremities, including the feet, are commonly experienced by people with diabetes.

This is due to high level of the glucose in the blood. The insulin production is low or stopped due to the kidneys are not able to filter the sugar back to the blood. The kidneys here try to get more water from the blood to dilute the glucose which keeps the bladder full and makes frequent urination.

Poor circulation, usually caused by vascular disease, can make hair disappear from the feet. When the heart loses the ability to pump enough blood to the extremities because of arteriosclerosis (commonly known as hardening of the arteries), the body has to prioritize its use. Hairy toes are, well, low on the totem pole.

Neuropathy caused by diabetes can affect any body part apart from numb feet and is classified into different types depending upon the organ involved. Peripheral neuropathy causing numb and tingling feet affects feet, legs hands, arms and toes. Autonomic neuropathy affects the nerves supplying to urinary organs, digestive systems, eyes, heart and lungs.
