Treatment of Bladder Cancer

By arlen arron at 2010-12-06 05:35:09
Bladder is a hollow organ located in lower abdomen i.e. the pelvic region which stores urine coming from kidney. Bladder cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer; seen more in aged people. Men are said to be infected by this tumor more than women.

Bladder is another important part of our body that helps in disposal of wastes from our body. Bladder is responsible for collecting and storing urine till it is finally disposed off from our body. The occurrence of cancer in bladder is known as bladder cancer.

While generally speaking about Bladder, it is an organ that stores the urine of the body. It allows the urine to be stored only for a short duration of time after certain time duration people will discharge it as urine. When the bladder if free without urine it appears to be compressed structure and like a balloon.

The most common symptoms of bladder cancer are blood in the urine, very frequent urination, or a pressure to urinate, only to find that you can't urinate. Any of these symptoms could have other causes, but certainly are worthy of a visit to a doctor. Bladder cancer is one cancer where early detection can result in a much less severe treatment option.

A common x-ray utilized to show images of the bladder is the intravenous pyelogram (IVP). Dye is injected into a vein and followed as it collects in the urine and travels through the urinary tract and into the bladder. When the dyed urine reaches the bladder, it will make the bladder show up on x-ray. Bladder tumors will be exposed as well.

The treatment options available for bladder cancer include surgery, biological therapy (in which a drug is administered directly into the bladder), chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.

There is no guaranteed way of preventing this type of cancer. However, there are certain precautions that can help you decrease the risk of getting cancer. These include quitting smoking, avoiding exposure to harmful chemicals, drinking water throughout the day, and choosing a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Overall, consuming fruits and vegetables does seem to reduce the risk for bladder cancer as a study involving 130 bladder patients in Serbia found. While the results are mixed, bladder cancer studies increasingly suggest that adding a little crunch to your meals with antioxidant rich vegetables will chop away at chances of developing bladder cancer.

The method used to treat bladder cancer will often depend on the stage of the disease and what form it has taken. For example, a superficial tumor may be easily removed in surgery simply by shaving it off. In other cases, immunotherapy is used to treat tumors, while chemotherapy may be used with others.

Treatment of bladder cancer depends on the stage of the disease, type of cancer and the patient's age and general health. Options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and immunotherapy. Surgery can include removing the bladder, prostate and lymph nodes which results in the patient requiring an external urinary appliance, but if caught in the early stages a tumor can be removed using instruments inserted through the urethra.

After reviewing the tests and their results, researchers were able to pinpoint several key factors that impact the occurrence and re-occurrence of this type of cancer. Univariate analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between 5 year survivorship and the level of education a person possessed, their marital status, drinking habits, and the degree of green tea consumption in males.

Radiation therapy can also be used to treat bladder cancer. This may be used after surgery to kill any cancer cells that may have been missed by the surgeon. There are two ways radiation therapy may be performed, you may either receive a dose of radiation from a machine, or your tumor is planted with radioactive 'seeds' that slowly release their radiation.

The most we currently do in this country to detect it is to check urine samples once a year for blood that may or may not be visible to the naked eye. The experts with The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) don't even recommend that much, since there is not yet evidence that doing so saves lives.

The primary causes of bladder cancer (and many other forms of cancer), is believed to be environmental carcinogens. With this in mind, tobacco use is considered to be the leading cause, especially in male patients where it is nearly twice as common as that of female patients. Occupations with the highest risk include metal workers, those employed in the textile industry, and individuals who work in printing. Bladder cancer is not believed, by most physicians, to be heritable (it does not spread through families).
