Food Addiction Treatment

By arlen arron at 2010-12-08 04:54:26
There are lots of programs out there that talk about the need to identify why you eat. They focus on the why, when, and how much in great detail. And then they try to address those issues by trying to "tame" the food. They limit portions, they substitute foods, they get you to write down everything you eat, all in the hope that somehow they can make you the master of food rather than the slave.

Earlier there was a different way of treating eating disorder where the patients were asked to refrain from a set of foods and they were asked to weigh the food that they eat, even in public places. This kind of a behavior would naturally make the patient feel embarrassed and thus result in non compliance to the treatment plan.

Food addiction, previously referred to as "compulsive overeating" is a condition wherein a person cannot stop themselves from eating. This means they eat continuously all day, and have frequent periods where they eat much more they need to. They will feel strongly compelled to continue eating, or helpless to stop. Oftentimes, the addict feels down, or will have guilt feelings once done binging.

Many people have doubts regarding the use of massage therapies, nutrition and vitamins used in these treatment centers. The first thing to be mentioned here is that the nutrients, vitamins and massage therapies can be a part of the addiction treatments provided at such a center These are beneficial beyond doubt.

Eating large amounts of food very quickly, preoccupation with body weight, constant feeling of hunger, mood swings, depression a history of unsuccessful dieting, a history of weight fluctuation and eating little in public while being clearly overweight are all signs shared by sufferers of food addiction.

Many people are addicted to food and do not even know it. People who are depressed due to weight gain low self-esteem feelings of being unworthy. The more as a society individuals continue to avoid themselves or the true purpose and keep going for the quick fix the more food addiction will run rampant. If I said to him or her, a slice of bread with butter on top which he or she is about to eat is just like a glass of scotch is to an alcoholic more than likely he or she will look at me and say that's crazy!

The treatment for food addicts and bulimics is complex. Behavioral therapy, family therapy, nutritional therapy and even hospitalization can be used to treat sufferers. But the most difficult thing in the treatment process still remains their coping with cravings to binge or binge and purge during the recovery process.

Food addicts crave for the satisfaction that a particular food can give them. Their desire for it may be both physical and psychological. There are different varieties of this addiction. The first one is compulsive overeating. Someone who eats too much and that can last for several days. The addict may sometimes lose weight but they tend to gain it back again.

Being a recovered alcoholic and addict, I had no trouble qualifying as a therapist simply because of first hand experience and understanding of the addictive personality. I see new patients almost daily who are addicted to food, exercise, video games, work, tobacco, and of course drink and drugs. Usually, by the time an addict reaches my office they are pretty well broken by their addiction and so in most cases I suggest he or she takes time out to attend an addiction treatment facility.

The Internet provides such comfort for this addiction. They don't even have to leave their home to conduct gambling activities. They can do it on a computer and in hiding. The bank account begins to dwindle and so does the relationship. If the person has a job, they will also want to do their online gambling using company time and this creates a chance for them to get fired as well.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved buprenorphine, a new drug that could reshape opiate addiction treatment in the United States. This treatment could make pharmacotherapy available and attractive to patients who previously shunned it. Psychologists helped develop this drug and will provide key services to patients treated with it.

Two years later, the Omnibus Anti-Drug Abuse Act mandated that anyone even loosely connected with the sale or possession of certain quantities of crack would also get a five-year sentence. In other words, if you lived with someone who had five grams of crack on the premises, even if it had nothing to do with you, you could go to prison for five years. In the six years following that law, the number of people in prison for drug offenses quadrupled. And offenders still didn't have the option of a drug addiction treatment center. That didn't start for another ten or twelve years.

Another great option to treat your addiction is a residential treatment and rehabilitation facility. Typically you will spend multiple weeks living in a treatment facility that has nice rooms, delicious food, as well as many of the other amenities of a nice vacation, but you will spend your day doing activities and working with addiction treatment specialists in a dedicated effort to quell your addiction.
