Diet to Control Constipation

By arlen arron at 2010-12-14 05:31:33
Many things in life, including what you eat, can cause constipation. Making changes in your diet will help your battle with chronic constipation. Although nutritional deficiencies are not the only cause of constipation, you can help alleviate your symptoms by using a constipation diet.

Constipation can have many causes. Here we are going to talk about a constipation diet. This means food you eat that gets you constipated and foods you can eat to relieve constipation. First off let's define what constipation is. That in and of itself is really not that easy for it is different for each and every person.

There are many kinds of foods that are going to be helpful in alleviating your constipation. You may not be aware and would be amazed by the power of fruits and vegetables. Do you know that these are very high in fiber? And fiber is the big solution to constipation. Fiber that goes to your intestine after having been digested binds with water in the intestine. The fiber adds to the mass of the stool which when softened by the fluids can easily pass.

Fiber is the most important part of the diet to avoid constipation. Both soluble and insoluble fibers are important and they are the part of fruits, vegetables and the grains which the body cannot digest. There are soluble fibers also which can easily be soluble in water and converts into soft, gel-like texture in the intestine. On the other hand there are insoluble fibers which after passing through intestine almost remain unchanged.

So in order to avoid constipation diet is a main factor which must be considered at each step. If we wish to avoid constipation, we should regularize our diet as per the requirement. You should also consume large amounts of water (7-9 glasses) every day apart from a proper diet.

Causes of Constipation

The causes of constipation begin from the food we choose to eat to the digestion to the elimination. The food we eat contains substances that are difficult for the stomach to digest and for the digestive fluids to break down. Understanding how the large intestine works in the digestion also helps. From the stomach, undigested food and food contents will be transported to the colon where the water is absorbed and the stools and waste products are formed.

There is also Dietary Fiber Cellulose, an insoluble fiber supplement which, though not as fibrous gram for gram as psyllium husk, can be added to smoothies and other drinks as a thickener. I love it added to a fruit or protein smoothies. Common sources of this fiber are Citrucel or if you're not fond of that orange flavor (yuck), NutriCology has Dietary Fiber Cellulose Powder without any flavoring.

Firstly is diet. A diet with enough fiber (20 to 35 grams each day) helps the body form soft, bulky stool. A doctor or dietitian can help plan an appropriate diet. High-fiber foods include beans, whole grain bread, brown rice and bran cereals, fresh fruits, and vegetables such as asparagus, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and carrots. For people prone to constipation, limiting foods that have little or no fiber, such as ice cream, cheese, meat, and processed foods, is also important.

Finally i would like to conclude that although constipation can be treated with laxatives and stool softeners,a high fiber diet can be equally effective, cheaper, and provide added benefits. A high fiber diet must be consistent and accompanied by sufficient fluid intake.

Speaking of laxatives, it is not a good idea to take commercial laxatives on a regular basis. They are fine for a onetime event, but can be habit forming. These products irritate the bowel, causing it to 'spasm." A stool softener, on the other hand, is safe to add as it is not absorbed and helps the stool to hold onto water, making gas and constipation while dieting less likely.

Like many busy people you may find that and go for long periods during the day without eating and drinking, perhaps without even realising that this the case. If this is so, then you might find that adopting a more regular eating pattern could help you towards a more regular bowel habit.

Treatment

1. Drinking hot water with sour limejuice and half a teaspoon of salt is an effective remedy for constipation.

2. A teaspoon of linseed taken with water before each meal provides bulk and lubrication, thus curing constipation.

3. The juice of two oranges taken in the morning with empty stomach for 8-10 days relieves constipation.

4. Regular drinking of water is highly beneficial for cleaning the system. Normally 6-8 glasses of water are recommended for digesting and dissolving the food nutrients.
