Plus, the drugs only work to the extent that they are taken. When you cease taking them, there is nothing to prevent your gout returning. Therefore, the uric acid-reducing drugs, in particular, must be taken over very long periods of time, sometimes lifetimes. Many people consider this to be a poor option, which is why they turn to totally natural remedies.

Reduce Purines! You should get a piece of paper and write down all the foods that are off limits for gout sufferers. Here is a list of foods with high purines: Anchovies, broth, legumes, poultry, gravy, liver, mussels, sardines, scallops, shrimp, sweetbreads, yeast, fish, shellfish, and most meats. A good rule of thumb would be to eat no more than 6 ounces of meat a day.

Diet for Gout Sufferers

1. Avoid these purine rich foods until you're cured: all red meats, fish roe, scallops and shellfish, beans, lentils, peas, poultry and alcohol.

2. You should also stay away from these vegetables and legumes: asparagus, cauliflower, mushrooms, oatmeal, soy, spinach and tripe.

3. Finally, here are foods that are either low in purines or neutralize the uric acid in the body. You should eat plenty of fresh cherries, strawberries, blueberries, grapes, raspberries, bananas and blueberries.
