How to Improve Posture

By arlen arron at 2010-12-27 05:15:11
Learning how to improve posture quickly is important if you're currently not using the best of postural stances. Posture plays a big role in not only the way we feel about ourselves, but also how others view us as well. Add to this that you will have enhanced energy levels, decreased risk of injuries, and will reduce your chances of suffering from back pain down the road and you can easily see how important this really is.

Many individuals do not realize it, but posture is very important. Posture is very important for individuals, because it affects the way you look and the way you feel. Believe it or not, when you have a good posture, it can really do justice on your body. A good posture can make you look thinner, younger, more professional and more confident. As you read this article, we are going to tell you some techniques on how to improve posture for good.

Start by having a look at yourself in the mirror. Knowing how to improve posture means knowing your own body, as everyone is different. You'll probably be surprised at the way you stand - you might naturally slouch or put extra weight on one side over the other. Seeing this can really help you to avoid bad habits in the future.

If poor posture has caused you to have lower and upper back pain, or shoulder and neck aches, headaches, or carpal tunnel, then the tips I'm about to share with you are coming just in time. Consistently putting this kind of stress on your body will have long term consequences, which can be avoided without very much effort. Not only that, who likes to be in pain? The study of ergonomics is all about keeping the body in proper alignment and in proper relationship to all the objects that come into contact with that body.

Let start with the feet, try to ground the energy downwards and spread every toe, so that the big toe and the little toe are evenly balanced into the ground. Drawing upward through the both legs, which are both straight. Then draw your core in, this means standing tall through your abdomen and tuck your tailbone under slightly so that your back is in its natural alignment. Then bring your shoulders back slightly and open your chest, whilst the arms loosely hang by your sides.

In order to relieve back pain you need to strengthen your core muscles. Your core muscles are composed of the transverse abdominals, obliques (internal & external), pelvis floor, lower back, and diaphragm. In a balanced body these core muscles are activated when you perform any kind of movement. The problem is that most people's core muscles are so weak that the brain struggles to activate them during these movements.

You can start with some exercises. Reverse stretching is the most overlooked ways of improving posture. In this, you have to stretch your body in the reverse order of your habitual holding patterns. After being in such a reverse position for 5-10 minutes, the connective tissues of your body which keeps you locked in bad pose will gradually begin to reshape.

By getting up at least once an hour helps not only refresh you so you can concentrate better by increasing blood and air circulation throughout the body and especially to the brain, but doing so will stretch out any of the muscles in the back and neck that may be tense due to standing, increasing the chances that you are able to improve posture.

If you're holding a great deal of tension in your shoulders, this also will cause problems for you down the road. This tension builds and builds, which will cause you to hunch your shoulders up to the neck. This reduces your ability to maintain a flat back and straight spinal column position, which directly influences how well you are improving posture.

A good way to retain your posture, even when you are fatigued, is to transfer weight. If you, for instance, are forced to spend a lot of time standing up, you will naturally go into a slouch. Resist this desire, and instead transfer your weight to the other leg. This will be a practiced thing-after a while, it will become a natural thing for you to do. Furthermore, if ever you have to bend over, such as when you have to tie your shoelaces or lift things, be sure to bend at the hips and at the knees.

Also, more people are on the road driving. When driving, the majority of people's heads, over the time traveling, drift forward. Some people are affected worse than others. Just recently I looked to my left while at a light and the woman next to me had both hands on the wheel with what looked like a death grip, and she just looked like her muscles were extremely tense and her head was about 6 inches forward of her shoulders.

Stress is another thing that can stop you from improving posture as you normally would. When we are stressed we will keep our shoulders shrugged up, shortening the spinal column considerably.

To help combat that, pay close attention to your stress levels and take moments during the day to at least do some deep breathing and neck rolls.
